Europe Industry Electricity Price Methodology
Eurostat benchmark prices, monthly PPI-based temporal disaggregation, nowcasting, and production-weighted European aggregates.
Indicator scope
This methodology applies to the Furnilytics dataset industry/other/europe_industry_electricity_price. The series is designed as a manufacturing-cost context indicator for non-household electricity prices. It is not a household tariff series and it is not a full industrial energy-cost measure.
nrg_pc_205 non-household electricity pricesSTS_INPPD_M domestic producer price indicesSource and extraction
Furnilytics uses Eurostat dataset nrg_pc_205 as the benchmark source for non-household electricity prices. The extraction filters to consumption band IC, corresponding to annual electricity use between 500 MWh and 2,000 MWh, price unit euro per kWh, and the tax concept that excludes VAT and other recoverable taxes and levies.
The benchmark source is published at semiannual frequency. Each observation therefore anchors either January to June or July to December for a country.
Monthly temporal disaggregation
To produce monthly estimates, Furnilytics uses Eurostat monthly domestic producer price indices from STS_INPPD_M. The preferred proxy is electricity supply, NACE D35.1. If a country does not have usable D35.1 monthly coverage, Furnilytics falls back to the broader electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply aggregate, NACE D35.
Within each observed semester, the monthly proxy relatives are scaled so that the arithmetic average of the six monthly estimates matches the observed Eurostat semester price exactly. This keeps the monthly path anchored to the official benchmark level.
If a country does not have a complete six-month proxy profile inside an observed semester, Furnilytics does not impose unsupported monthly variation. In those cases, the semester benchmark is repeated across the six months.
Nowcasting after the latest observed semester
After the latest observed Eurostat semester, Furnilytics extends the series forward using month-to-month movement from the same monthly PPI proxy family. The last benchmarked monthly estimate is carried forward with those observed proxy changes. No discretionary smoothing or analyst adjustment is added.
European aggregates
The dataset also publishes EU27 and EUROPE aggregate rows. These are calculated as furniture-production-turnover-weighted monthly averages using the Furnilytics yearly dataset industry/market_size/eu_furniture_production_turnover_yearly. When the monthly electricity series extends beyond the latest available weight year, the latest weight structure is carried forward until a newer weight year is available.
Interpretation limits
This series should be read as a comparable electricity-cost signal for industrial users rather than as a full plant-energy-cost measure. Many furniture manufacturers use wood residues or other non-electric heat sources, so electricity prices alone will not capture the total energy-cost mix. The series is most useful for cross-country comparison, cost-pressure context, and recent directional analysis.
Eurostat benchmark values and monthly proxy series may be revised. Historical monthly estimates can therefore change when benchmark levels, proxy observations, or source coverage are updated.
