Latest Eurostat 2024 Furniture Data Review
On 1 September 2026, Eurostat published a substantially more complete set of 2024 Structural Business Statistics for the European furniture industry.
This technical review focuses primarily on furniture manufacturing (NACE C31), with a shorter assessment of furniture-related retail (NACE G47.59). The new Eurostat observations are compared with Furnilytics existing 2024 estimates and, where possible, cross-checked against national statistical offices and other official country-level sources.
The aim is to verify the newest figures, investigate the largest discrepancies between European and national data, and determine whether individual observations should be adopted directly, treated with caution, or used to refine country-specific estimation methods.
Furnilytics Estimations
Furnilytics combines official annual benchmarks with higher-frequency indicators to produce a more current view of European furniture markets while structural statistics are still incomplete. For furniture manufacturing (NACE C31), the latest official production value is extended using country-level industrial production and producer price developments. For furniture-related retail (NACE G47.59), Furnilytics uses the narrowest reliable nominal retail indicator available, preferably a direct furniture or G47.59 series and otherwise a closely related national proxy.
The methodology is applied at country level rather than through a single uniform European model. Source availability, statistical scope and currency treatment differ between markets, so each estimate is based on a defined hierarchy of official sources and country-specific validation rules. When new annual Structural Business Statistics are released, they are used to re-benchmark the series and to test the performance of the underlying nowcast. Material deviations are reviewed against national statistics, adjacent NACE categories and other activity indicators before the methodology or benchmark is changed. This validation process is also used to identify structural breaks, weak proxy series and cases where an official observation may not be directly representative of underlying furniture-market activity.
The following precision has been measured between the estimation techniques compared to the official new Eurostat annual data.

Manufacturing (NACE C31)
The newly released 2024 structural data provides the first broad opportunity to benchmark Furnilytics European furniture manufacturing estimates against a much more complete set of official annual observations.
Across lower-risk markets, the estimates remain close to the newly published figures. The weighted absolute error is 1.3%, while the median absolute country deviation is 1.7%. The median signed deviation is only 0.1%, indicating that positive and negative deviations largely offset each other and that there is little evidence of a systematic upward or downward bias.
Germany and several other higher-risk markets are reviewed separately. In these cases, confidentiality, limited comparability or inconsistencies between Eurostat and national sources make a direct benchmark less reliable. The following country examples illustrate where the estimates align closely with official data, where different statistical concepts converge, and where newly published figures require further review.
Poland
Poland illustrates the importance of distinguishing between statistical concepts. The 2024 change measured in PLN was -3.7% in the GUS/B+R sold-production series, -3.2% in the GUS PKWiU/PRODCOM furniture series and -4.2% in Eurostat. Despite differences in coverage and measurement, all three sources point to essentially the same underlying contraction.
The Furnilytics estimate therefore appears directionally and quantitatively consistent with the national evidence, even where the final euro-denominated market levels differ because of source definitions and currency conversion.

Italy
Italy presents a different pattern. Earlier estimates showed a wider gap between industry, national and Eurostat measures, partly because the available sources captured different concepts: enterprise turnover, broader furnishing activity and SBS production value. The latest 2024 releases show these series moving closer together. Italy therefore provides a useful example of how estimates can converge as more complete structural data becomes available.

Germany
Germany is the principal exception. Eurostat’s newly released SBS data reports a 2.5% increase in German C31 production value in 2024. The increase is almost entirely attributable to C3109 “other furniture”, where SBS output rises by 10.6%, while office furniture, kitchen furniture and mattresses all decline.
This movement is difficult to reconcile with the wider German evidence. Industrial production declined by more than 7%, producer prices were broadly stable, and both Destatis establishment statistics and industry reporting indicate a roughly 7–8% decline in furniture turnover. Industry data for “other furniture” itself shows an 11.2% contraction rather than the 10.6% increase reported in SBS.
The discrepancy is also not explained by inventories: finished-goods and work-in-progress stock changes actually became slightly more negative in 2024. The unresolved difference instead sits primarily in the SBS enterprise-level turnover measure.

Other
Not every discrepancy represents the same type of problem. Several smaller markets had already been marked as higher-risk because annual structural data was incomplete, suppressed or dependent on indirect estimation.
Slovenia, Slovakia and Romania show larger Furnilytics deviations, although the newly released Eurostat values are broadly consistent with the corresponding national sources. Croatia shows the opposite pattern: the Furnilytics estimate aligns more closely with the national source, while the Eurostat observation remains harder to reconcile.
Retail (NACE G47.59)
The newly released 2024 Structural Business Statistics also provide a useful benchmark for Furnilytics’ furniture-related retail estimates. Excluding the two main structural outliers, the median absolute country deviation is 1.2%, while the median signed deviation is 0.0%, indicating no systematic upward or downward bias across the reviewed markets.
The clearest exceptions are Ireland and Italy. In Ireland, Eurostat reports G47.59 turnover rising by around 52%, while the comparable CSO retail value index increased by less than 1% and other activity indicators remained broadly stable. Italy shows the opposite pattern: a sharp SBS decline despite broadly stable national furniture and home-furnishing retail indicators. In both cases, the evidence points more towards structural, classification or enterprise-population effects than equivalent changes in underlying consumer demand.
The Netherlands, Latvia and Slovakia also showed larger deviations and were reviewed against national retail indicators, adjacent NACE categories and the underlying SBS components. No comparable structural break was identified, so the new 2024 SBS observations are accepted as the preferred annual benchmarks in those markets.
Overall, the retail review suggests that most of the 2024 nowcasts remained close to the later official observations. The main challenge is concentrated in a small number of countries where interpreting the annual SBS data requires additional country-level validation rather than a straightforward benchmark update.
Adjustments following the 2024 validation
The new 2024 observations are used to re-anchor Furnilytics series where they are consistent with national and higher-frequency indicators. Where material discrepancies remain unresolved, the existing harmonised estimate is retained and the official observation is placed under methodological review rather than incorporated automatically.
For G47.59, the 2024 Eurostat observations for Italy and Ireland are temporarily excluded from benchmarking pending further source reconciliation. For C31, the same applies to Germany and Italy, where the new SBS result remains inconsistent with several independent national production and turnover indicators.
The review also led to several methodology refinements. Slovakia C31 now incorporates quarterly C31–33 indicators as an additional reference, while Slovenia C31 uses domestic turnover as an extra cross-check. For non-euro markets, the FX integration logic has also been refined so underlying market movements are assessed in local currency before conversion to euro.

Conclusion
The latest 2024 releases broadly support the Furnilytics view of the European furniture market, while also showing why annual statistics still require country-level validation. Across both manufacturing and retail, most estimates were close to the later official observations and showed little systematic upward or downward bias.
The more important outcome is what the outliers revealed. In some markets, such as Slovakia and Slovenia, the review led to refinements in the estimation methodology. In others, notably Germany for C31 and Italy and Ireland for G47.59, the newly published figures remain difficult to reconcile with national and higher-frequency indicators and are therefore being held under methodological review rather than adopted automatically.
This reinforces a core principle of the Furnilytics approach: official annual data is the foundation, but harmonised market estimates also require source reconciliation, local-market context and continuous validation. The 2024 release therefore does not simply update the numbers; it improves the underlying model and highlights where European furniture statistics remain least comparable.
